Without a huge amount of warning or fanfare, a new Activision-published iOS game called The Bowling Dead has rolled onto the App Store.

The world's gone zombie mad, it seems. Films, comic books, video games, and TV shows - they're all after their pound of rotting flesh.

You can now add The Bowling Dead to the roster with its somewhat irreverent take on the subject.

Here, you're taking on the undead with an array of "weaponized bowling balls."

So, you tap the screen to launch your improbable arsenal of projectiles (from a first-person perspective), then indulge in some swipe-based close quarters hacking.

Striiiike!

Besides a 40-stage campaign mode (complete with bosses), The Bowling Dead offers up an Unlimited Survival Mode in which you try to best your own and others' high scores.

It all looks very silly indeed, but this could be just the kind of zombie fix we need after the weighty conclusion of The Walking Dead: The Game.

Let's just hope it's not a turkey. Ahem.

The Bowling Dead is out now for iPhone (4 and up), iPad (2 and up) and iPod touch (fourth and fifth gen only) on the New Zealand App Store, so expect it to go live in the UK at midnight tonight.

It's free to play, so prepare yourself for plenty of in-app purchases if you want to obtain the more outlandish bowling balls / undead mashers.
