After an E3 that seemed to suggest the Battle Royale craze was dying down, The Tetris Company (in collaboration with N3TWORK) has only gone and announced Tetris Royale, a totally original concept that has definitely never been done, no sir.

Tetris, if you didn't know, tasks you with rapidly rotating and adjusting a procession of what are known as Tetriminos to create horizontal rows that are then cleared from the board. Once your Tetriminos extend beyond the top of the board, it's game over.

This new spin on things sees 100 players facing off against one another. Much like any other Battle Royale game, players will slowly drop off as the match progresses until only one remains. Climbing leaderboards and winning daily challenges are your main aims here, though taking part is what really matters, right? Not in harsh world of Tetris Royale it doesn't.

Doing well, which in this case might mean a top-10 finish, will net you customisation items as well as gameplay boosts and power-ups. It also serves up a nice selection of game modes, including the 100-player Tetris Royale, sizable daily competitions with thousands of players, and even a solo Marathon mode which you can use to master the game and prove your Tetris credentials.

Though it feels like Tetris has never not been popular, the recent release of Tetris 99 and Tetris Effect has booted it back into the limelight for a whole new generation. And with this one being the first collaboration in a multi-year deal between N3TWORK and The Tetris Company, it's pretty much a dead cert that we'll be seeing plenty more takes on multiplayer Tetris in future.

While we don't yet have a precise release date for this one, its beta is set to launch at some point in 2019. You can expect to see it on both iOS and Android, and it'll be super interesting to see how it stacks up against the wonderful Tetris 99.
