Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now on Nintendo Switch, and in case you missed our review, it's rather wonderful.

Sadly, there really isn't anything to match the game on mobile. We can't see Nintendo bringing the series to mobile any time soon, either.

But there are some mobile games out there that plough similar terrain - that is, chaotic side-on arena brawlers, preferably with a multiplayer component.

If you haven't got a Switch (or £50 to spare), check out these Super Smash Bros. Ultimate alternatives on your phone.

1
Mayhem Combat

Publisher: Vivid Games
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Fighting, Multiplayer

Mayhem Combat

Mayhem Combat is the latest addition to this list, and it presents a pleasantly simplified take on the Smash Bros. formula.

The idea remains to beat up your opponents in free-for-all platformer combat. But the controls, the levels, and the characters are much simplified and better suited to casual mobile play.

2
Fright Fight

Publisher: APPSolute Games
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Action, Fighting, Multiplayer

Fright Fight

This one's been around for more than four years, which is a tribute to its longevity. Fright Fight follows the Smash Bros. formula fairly faithfully, but with simplified touchscreen controls and a horror-themed universe.

So, rather than Mario and co. you're scrapping with yetis, werewolves and vampires. It's a pleasant, knock-about freemium brawler that might just scratch that Smash Bros. itch.

3
Rowdy Wrestling

Publisher: Colin Lane
Available on: iOS
Genre: Arcade, Fighting

Rowdy Wrestling

High on spectacle, utterly ridiculous, and an awful lot of fun. That's Rowdy Wrestling. This 2D brawler has you careening around a ring, trying to knock up to three opponents out of bounds and clobbering them with any objects you find laying around.

Sound familiar? Well, the premise kind of is, but Rowdy Wrestling has a super-casual mobile charm all of its own.

4
Mayhem

Publisher: Chobolabs
Available on: iOS
Genre: Multiplayer, Shooter, MOBA

Mayhem

No to be confused with the aforementioned Mayhem Combat, Mayhem offers something a little different from the other two games on this list. It's still a side-on arena combat game with platforming elements, but the action is way more shooty.

It's also a 3 v 3 team-based affair where you scrap over a central capture point. There's a definite MOBA vibe to Mayhem, then, but the influence of Smash Bros. is clear to see. You can even ram your opponents into the air.

5
Marvel Contest of Champions

Publisher: Marvel Entertainment
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Card battler, Fighting, Film/TV tie-in, Multiplayer
Find out more about Marvel Contest of Champions
Marvel Contest of Champions

Okay, so Marvel Contest of Champions is more in line with a tradition one-on-one fighting game like Street Fighter than Smash Bros.

But the premise of bringing together a bunch of beloved characters to biff each other in 2D combat is rather familiar, and there's a pleasingly strategic tag-team element too. Besides which, it's just really fun mobile brawler.
