The iOS version of blood-splattered platformer Super Meat Boy has been temporarily put on hold, while the team works on a brand new project.

All things considered, the road to the App Store has been a rocky one for the mobile iteration of the cult PC platformer.

In fact, given Team Meat co-CEO Edumund McMillen's public criticism of Apple's mobile marketplace, it was fair to assume that Super Meat Boy would never make the leap onto iPhone and iPad.

However, a flurry of posts from the dev's Twitter account back in February revealed that Team Meat was working on a touchscreen version of SMB after all.

What's new, pussycat?

Now, though, it seems that the Canabalt-inspired mobile translation has been shelved in favour of new project Mew-Genics. Team Meat hasn't revealed which platforms this new game is for.

Described by McMillen as "the strangest project I've ever worked on", the game will involve cats and contain randomly generated elements.

Though the dev's blog confirmed that Mew-Genics will be "the next official Team Meat game", McMillen reassured fans that SMB for iOS had not been abandoned completely.

"The new Super Meat Boy (SMB:TG) is still in dev", the blog states, "just on hold till we squeeze this little kitten out of our loins". Ew.
