With only a week to go until we can finally get our hands on Super Mario Run it doesn't come as much of a surprise that you'll need an internet connection in order to play it.

According to a recent interview with Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto on Mashable the main reason behind its need for connection is security (i.e. piracy). With the game releasing in 150 countries, all with their own networks, by running Super Mario Run as 'online only' it helps keep the software secure.

By running the game online it also means that Nintendo can keep track of whether the three game modes are all functioning together.

"We wanted to be able to leverage that network connection with all three of the [Super Mario Run] modes to keep all of the modes functioning together and offering the game in a way that keeps the software secure. This is something that we want to continue to work on as we continue to develop the game."

Whilst it's a good idea in Nintendo's eyes to protect the game, it means that Super Mario Run won't quite be an on-the-go game like most of us wanted unless you tap into your mobile data.
