Star Wars: Trench Run iPhone gets 2.0 update: Ships, levels, and 59p remote control add-on

The trench run sequence at the end of the first Star Wars film is an iconic piece of cinema, and when the first wire-frame, booth-enclosed, sit-down, paddle-holding, roaring, zapping, Kenobi-voiced arcade game hit the arcades in 1983 it was a hit.

It's fair to say that against this backdrop the iPhone game Star Wars: Trench Run was a disappointment. Instead of bringing the game up to code with improved graphics and exciting accelerometer controls, Trench Run sent it spinning into the void thanks to glitchy performance, weak enemy AI, and general shoddiness.

It's just got a new update. Trench Run version 2.0 comes with three extra levels: Escape, in which you fend off TIE fighters from the Millenium Falcon's turrets; Han Solo, in which you man a turret under the Millenium Falcon and cover Luke as he attacks the Death Star; and Han Solo Arcade, in which you protect Y-Wings and destroy turrets.

There are also four new ships: Millenium Falcon, Y-Wing, TIE fighter, and Darth Vader's Advanced TIE fighter.

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the update is the add-on that lets you play the PC version of Trench Run using your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control by splitting the screen into four sections: view, pause, slow motion, and fire weapon. According to Kotaku's Brian Crecente, it's 'liquid smooth.'

The add-on costs an extra 59p / 99c.
