Skylanders: Battlegrounds heading to iOS devices next month via new 'Activate' mobile platform

Activision has confirmed the imminent release of the Skylanders: Battlegrounds bundle for iOS, which will come with action figures and a Bluetooth-powered portal.

Though an image of the Skylanders: Battlegrounds box was leaked earlier in the month, Activision has waited until now to officially unveil the new game, which is due to launch in November.

Building on the success of gallery shooter Skylanders: Cloud Patrol (which has topped 1.5 million downloads on iOS), Skylanders: Battlegrounds will leave its target-tapping roots behind and focus on RPG elements.

Speaking to Joystiq, Activision mobile VP Greg Canessa revealed that fans could look forward to a "console-like, action-RPG", featuring "real-time arena combat".

Like the hugely popular home console Skylanders iterations, Battlegrounds will allow you to transport your Skylanders toy collection into the action using a physical portal, which will connect to iOS devices via Bluetooth.

Skylanders: Activate!

Skylanders: Battlegrounds developer Vicarious Visions will also release resource-management title Skylanders: Lost Islands globally at the end of next month. Currently exclusive to Canada, the game involves building your own village in the hope of attracting a township of the titular beasties.

Both titles will take advantage of Activision's new mobile platform Activate, which is also expected to go live within the next few weeks. Using Facebook details to log in to Activate, you will be able to store your Skylanders in a virtual stable, and gain access to exclusive online features.

Though iOS is the only confirmed platform so far for both these Skylanders titles, we expect to see them popping up on other mobile platforms in the future.
