Air combat sequel Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders dive-bombs onto iOS

Much like a Spitfire or Messerschmitt Ace, the Sky Gamblers series has a fairly impressive service record. Both Rise of Glory and Air Supremacy took Silver Awards for their excellence in combat.

Now, Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders, the third entry in the air combat series, will attempt to eclipse its predecessors and earn top honours from the Apple Air Marshals. Well, our reviewer, at least. Maybe, he'll dress up while playing.

Anyway, one thing that will definitely help Storm Raiders's case is its incredibly good looks. And judging by its App Store product page, the game's developer, Atypical, is rather proud of the graphics.

"Specular masks", "bump mapping", "atmospheric scattering", and "volumetric clouds" are just four of the special effects Atypical makes reference to in the blurb for Storm Raiders, you see. My personal fave is volumetric clouds. For obvious reasons.

The game also features highly detailed planes with "interactive cockpits", accurately recreated real-world cities, and extensive damage modelling on the vast fleet of planes available.

Furthermore, this WWII air combat game contains a number of multiplayer modes, including Capture the Flag, Last Man Standing, and the all-new Assault mode.

Storm Raiders also supports not one but three of Apple's own services.

For competitive types, Game Center is on board. For those with a HD TV, in-built AirPlay support enables you to stream the action to your 46" display. And for those with multiple iOS gizmos, iCloud integration lets you sync your progress across your devices.

Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders is out now on iPhone and iPad, priced £2.99 / $4.99.
