Shuttle Scuttle brings its challenging retro space shooting and ugly aliens to Android

Shuttle Scuttle is a thoroughly retro space shooter that's just came out on Android, following its iOS launch last year.

The chiptunes blip in your ears, the virtual controls emulate a two-button game controller, and the story gets no more complex than shooting invaders from outer space.

Not breaking the trend, the game's 32 levels (and eight boss battles) consist of just a single screen that you'll have to scoot around in, blasting space fiends as much as you can.

It should be noted that the enemy designs are surprisingly menacing for pixel art. Particularly the gruesome bosses.

Not only do you have limited shields to worry about, but your movement is restricted by fuel, which causes you to re-consider dodging some incoming fire. There are also free-floating astronauts to save for extra points, if you can spare the fuel.

All of these elements make for a highly challenging game, and I'd be lying if a little frustration doesn't come with that, especially as you also have limited lives.

Shuttle Scuttle is meant for those who don't mind replaying levels over and over to master them. If that sounds too laborious, you may want to look elsewhere for your fix.

Otherwise, Shuttle Scuttle definitely has that nostalgia-inducing experience, and it doesn't forget the difficulty retro games delivered, either.

You can pick up Shuttle Scuttle for iOS on the App Store [buy] or for Android on Google Play [buy] at £1.49 / $1.99.
