I've befriended an alien crab by giving it some snacks. It's now following me around the oddly square remains of a destroyed planet, attacking anything that looks hostile.

It's nice to have something with which to spend these last few moments of my cloned life. I know I'm going to die pretty soon, because that's just what happens in Shattered Planet.

The game is an isometric RPG set in the deep future that sees you playing as a series of clones. This one, with crab in tow, will eventually be shot to death by a laser turret in a subterranean laboratory. So it goes.

You control the game via a series of taps, sending your clone jogging around the fogged-out world, exploring, discovering loot, and smacking alien critters that get all up in your grill.

Every time you're sent down to the planet, it's a bit different. You stomp around, find a portal, and zoom to the next section. As you play, you'll discover more of the story.

There are more than a hundred lumps of loot to grab. There's also a currency that looks a lot like a delicious slice of toast... but isn't.

Shattered Planet looks gorgeous. And while the controls are a bit flappy and there's a danger it could get a bit repetitive, it's also free. So, you can't really grumble.

Shattered Planet is out right now for iOS for free [download], and has been out on Android in some territories for a couple of weeks for the same low price [download]. It will go live around the rest of the Android world on April 10th.
