MLB.com announces new RBI Baseball title for consoles and mobile

The year was 1988.

The Berlin Wall was still standing, 16-bit games were years away, and Namco released an iconic sports game for the NES called RBI Baseball.

RBI Baseball would launch a beloved sports franchise that ended with the release of RBI Baseball 95 for the Sega 32X. Since then, the series has gone sadly quiet.

Now, almost 20 years later, RBI Baseball is set to make a return for 'next generation consoles' and mobile devices thanks to the interceding hand of MLB.com.

Play at the plate

In its original 8-bit incarnation, RBI Baseball was a gamechanger - literally - as it was the first game licensed by the Major League Baseball player's union.

As such, it was also the first game to use players' real names.

We don't know what to expect from RBI Baseball 14 just yet since the only information on the landing page is the spiffy logo above, but we do know that baseball-loving sportsfans should be overjoyed at the prospect of RBI Baseball's return.

We'll be sure to keep you updated when we hear more about this one.
