New screens released for R-Type on iPhone, EA to publish?

Last November we brought you news that developer DotEmu was collaborating with Irem to bring seminal bullet-hell shooter R-Type to iPhone. To gamers who've been around long enough this was exciting news: R-Type is a stone cold classic, still enjoyable today.

In case you're not familiar with it, R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter that gives you a fairly slow moving ship to pilot and throws wave upon wave of aliens at you. It stands out for several reasons, including the awesome music, the Force pod that you can attach to the back or front of your ship, the volume of enemies, and the sadistic difficulty level.

In the seven months since the story broke we haven't heard a squeak from the developers, but a set of screenshots on Gamespress today tells suggests not only that the game is on the way but that it has been taken on by EA.

No word yet on a release date or price.
