Monument Valley and Dream Quest are heading the Quality Index's Top 10 rated Android and iOS games of May 2014

If you were wondering what the best-reviewed iOS and 'droid games on the web last month were, here are the iPhone Quality Index, iPad Quality Index, and Android Quality Index round-ups for May to fill you in.

The iPhone, iPad, and Android Quality Indexes boast over 650,000 reviews (in total) from websites like 148Apps, Pocket Gamer, and IGN, and use a unique metric to create a single definitive score for each iOS and Android title.

Dream a dream

Dream Quest tops the May iPhone Qi (AND iPad Qi) game chart by mashing together two of the hottest genres of the moment.

You see, it combines the addictive collect-'em-up qualities of the deck building genre with roguelike dungeon-crawling gameplay... and to great effect.

Next is KeroBlaster, an old-school action-platformer from the genius mind behind indie cult classic Cave Story. It might look like it's from the '80s, but this is one thoroughly modern iOS blaster.

Finally, we have Kiwanuka, an utterly fresh and charming puzzler that sees you building living swing bridges out of the very people you're trying to guide to safety. It's weird, it's stylish, it's great.

At #2 this month on the iPad Qi leaderboard is Botanacula, Amanita Design's gorgeous adventure-puzzler starring an adorable cast of bugs. Game worlds don't tend to feel quite as alive as this one. In fourth spot, meanwhile, is Yakuto, which has served up a fizzing, spinning delight of a casual sports game in Table Tennis Touch. Spin, swerve, and smash your way through a number of tricky matches and side-tasks in what proves to be the best game of ping-pong on mobile.

Monument Valley has wowed, soothed, and befuddled its way to the top of the May Android Qi game chart. It's a brain-twisting puzzler that tips its cone-shaped hat to M.C. Escher's logic-defying art.

At #4, though, OTTTD takes the traditional tower defence template and ramps the action up to 11. It helps that it's an absolute hoot to play, shot through with a deeply silly sense of humour.

Flapping closely behind that is Noodlecake's Golfy Bird, a product of the infamous Flappy Jam game jam. This unlikely mash-up sees you tapping to stay aloft, Flappy Bird-style, through the courses of Super Stickman Golf 2.

Down in seventh spot, meanwhile, we have CastleStorm - Free to Siege. It's an unexpectedly successful conversion of a console game in which Zen Studios marries tower offence, hack 'n' slash action, and Angry Birds-like destruction.

N.B. While we only display the average score to one decimal place, the lists are generated to further significant figures. We just don't show them all. And, naturally, these are static graphs based on live listings which are subject to constant change as new releases and reviews emerge.

In order to provide a regular marker of the critical zeitgeist, however, we will continue to round up the best of the iOS and Android games released each month to provide the definitive Quality Index top tens.
