| Pocket Mortys

Pocket Mortys is, to all intents and purposes, Pokemon via Rick and Morty. If at least one of those things means anything to you, then you're going to be onto a winner with this one.

It captures both the bonkers humour of the cartoon and the rhythm of the original Pokemon games pretty much perfectly, and while there are a few niggles, they're easy to look past.

There might not be the compulsion to catch them all, and some of the jokes might fall a little flat if you're not a fan of the cartoon, but there's still an awful lot of retro fun to be had here.

So you're collecting monsters?

Not exactly. You're actually collecting alternate dimension variations of Morty. There are a lot of these, and they have different moves, different skills, and different attributes.

There are four different types of Morty - rock, paper, scissors, and plain. The various types have strengths and weaknesses against one another. Rock will mash scissors, but is weak against paper and so on.

Your team of Mortys trails out behind your Rick, and building a balanced set is important. You collect new Mortys by capturing them in the wild or by using the gacha-style machines scattered around the world.

The battles are turn-based, and you can switch between Mortys on the fly. Attacks cost AP, and you'll need to top that up once it's run out. You need to daze an opponent's entire team to win a fight.

There are potions and other serums you can use to heal and buff up your team, and items you find in the world can be used to craft new things to aid you on your quest.

You mentioned problems though?

The game isn't quite as tight as Pokemon. Sometimes you're wandering around, not exactly lost, more just bumbling to find the next master you need to fight. And things do get a little bit repetitive in the early stages too.

Still, if you're looking for a monster-collecting RPG for mobile then you could do a lot worse than giving this one a go.

It's fun, it's funny, and while it doesn't build too much on the Pokemon legacy, it gets all of the basics spot on.

Equal parts homage to Pokemon and fan-service to Rick and Morty aficionados, this one is well worth a look
