Okay, so the The Journey Down: Chapter One didn't come out in 2014, but in 2012. But we'd like you to think of Chapter One going free as a celebration of The Journey Down: Chapter Two being released this year.

The Journey Down: Chapter One is the kind of point-and-click adventure that may even entice haters of the genre to give it a look.

It follows Bwana and Kito, two gas station attendees weighed down by debt, who have been made up in the style of wood-carved tribal masks.

It's through them and their surrounding community at Kingsport Bay that the game explores black African and Caribbean themes, which is so rarely entertained in games.

Into the depths

In this first chapter, they stumble across a woman called Lina. She entices the pair to investigate the mysterious taboo of Underland to find a journal.

With her, they start out on a dangerous trail that they hope will also reveal what happened to their father, Captain Kaonandodo.

It's a superb mix of humour, a jazzy soundtrack, and puzzles that aren't too taxing to solve. Combine that with its unique stylings and an intriguing story, and you have a compelling little number.

At review, we said that The Journey Down: Chapter One is a "well constructed piece of adventure gaming" that is "worth checking out even if you're not a point-and-click sort of person."

What you waiting for, then? Go and grab it on the App Store for the brilliant price of zilch. And make sure to come back on Monday to get your next freebie.
