Remember the Sudoku craze of 07? Commuters up and down the UK were bent over their newspapers on the train, chuckling maniacally when they completed another Hard-level puzzle, then beating their heads against the windows when they realised they had three '2's in the same box.

Happy days.

Anyway, Sudoku is still pretty popular, so we see bright things ahead for Gameloft's Platinum Sudoku iPhone game. It's a conversion of the existing mobile game of the same name, promising a frankly scary 20 million different grids to solve.

That's right, 20 million! They're spread across five difficulty levels, so even if you're rubbish and have to stick to the beginner's level, you should get around four million puzzles to work through.

This being iPhone, the game uses the device's touchscreen, so you can scribble numbers on-screen with your finger – much like you do in the Sudoku bit of Brain Training on DS.

Our experience with Platinum Sudoku on iPhone is that fat-thumbed users may struggle a bit to highlight the right squares.

However, it's worth persisting – not least because there are six mini-games to break up the action, plus a separate Kakuro mode, and a big choice of fonts, background skins, soundtracks and grid styles.

Anyway, Platinum Sudoku is out now on the App Store for £4.99. Click here to go straight to its product page.
