There’ll be more than a few homebrew gamers out there who will recognise the name of this GTA-style criminal racing game, and just as many who missed it on the Amiga, Mac, GBA and GP2X. The good news is that Apex Designs has been busily adapting its well-kept secret to the iPhone, and Payback should be coming your way any time now.

Payback is a non-linear game that’s simple to progress through – just rack up the required number of points and it’s on to the next level. The intrigue comes from the illicit ways in which you can shore up those points.

Taking jobs from the local mafia boss, hunting down secret missions or going on killing sprees are all ways to rack up your blood-soaked scores, and with 11 huge cities to explore it sounds as though there’ll be plenty to keep you busy.

The lush 3D visuals, dynamic lighting, reflection effects and over ten years of development time (if you include those early 32-bit versions – which we do), this looks set to be a pretty exciting affair to reinvigorate our bloodlust in the New Year.

Payback comes at the perfect time to compete with the long awaited DS version of GTA, Chinatown Wars, and with there only really being Car Jack Streets to give it much of a challenge on the App Store, it ought to stand out among the crowd. Nice.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
