Gameloft heightens Halo comparisons with new N.O.V.A. footage

When this whole N.O.V.A. vs Halo comparison thing started out, I have to admit it was a bit of a joke.

Both are first person shooters, where you play space marines in a sci-fi alien setting. Both hand you pistol, assault rifle, sniper rifle, plasma gun, shotgun, rocket launcher and grenades.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - so do lots of games. Yet everything I've seen since the initial announcement has only tightened the comparison.

The first gameplay video demoed combat aboard a spaceship, mirroring the opening scenes on the Pillar of Autumn in Halo: Combat Evolved.

Then there was the artwork of Karl Wardin, looking rather like a blue version of Master Chief.

The final straw however is a new gameplay video showcasing the previously mentioned spaceship battle.

There's enemies falling down from the ceiling - much like the Covenant - though in this case they're called Judgers. Then there's an ice level, an embedded gun position, a forest level that's looks much like the first planetary setting of Halo, the sniper rifle zoom sight, the way the rocket launcher fires...

But the best bit is when you jump into the Warthog-like wheeled vehicle and take control of its rear-mounted gun, before the action switches to what looks like the inside of an enemy spaceship.

Okay, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and we won't be able to tell exactly how close the games are until N.O.V.A. is out - and yes, I am really hoping the comparison extends to the quality of the gameplay - but if nothing else the way the video is edited suggests someone in France is having a lot of fun.

Cue said video...
