Not every App Store developer gets it totally right first time.

I mean, FunGenerationLab's Fearless Wheels found plenty of fans, but for many players it was just too hard.

Rather than tinker with the existing game, the studio has returned with a title that is stylistically very similar but is more approachable and easy to get to grips with. This is a brave move, then, but it's one that just about pays off for the team.

Dream big

The Motocross Elite setup is simple: you're a bobble-headed motocross rider with dreams of the big time. To prove your worth, you'll need to tackle a wide range of undulating tracks with the ultimate objective of coming first in each contest.

You earn cash for skilful racing and get additional coin for pulling off stunts, such as backflips while in mid-air.

The controls are also simple: you use one virtual button to accelerate, and one to slam on the brakes. You've also got left and right directional buttons, which you use to rotate your rider when you're airborne and steady his riding position when coasting through mud.

Mud slinging

You can expect to crash a few times during your career, then. Don't be too downhearted, though: the rival racers (which include zombies, devils, and invisible men, strangely) are just as likely to wipe out after a spectacular jump.

You can use cash collected from races to purchase upgrades for your bike, giving you the edge over more skilful opponents. Earning enough money for the really sweet enhancements takes time, a fact which makes the existence of queue-jumping in-app purchases a total non-surprise.

Thankfully, it's possible to perform pretty well in the game even without all the best kit, so it's not a total deal breaker.

Motocross madness

Motocross Elite's instinctive controls, cute visuals, and smattering of stunt work make for a pleasantly addictive experience, but it does become repetitive quicker than it possibly should. A bit more variety in the track obstacles and stunts would have been very welcome.

Even so, the action is so immediately gratifying that it's perfect for quick-burst gaming sessions - and even when you start to become slightly indifferent to the on-track action, you've always got the spectacle of competing with an invisible man on a motorbike.

Motocross Elite

While FunGenerationLab doesn't do anything especially new or different with Motocross Elite, it is good fun while it lasts. Repetition can set in after a few hours, mind

Damien's mum hoped he would grow out of playing silly video games and gain respectable employment. Perhaps become a teacher or a scientist, that kind of thing. Needless to say she now weeps openly whenever anyone asks how her son's getting on these days.
