We've covered Monument Valley to great lengths in the past and we're not blind - we know that it is a stunning series aesthetically. However, after reading up on some of ustwo's design inspiration we're more fascinated than ever.

Earlier today, an article over on The Work Behind The Work ran through a bunch of level designs and their inspiration. Monument Valley 2's Art Director, David Fernández Huerta, touched on each piece of art work for some of the game's most beautiful levels, some of which are wonderfully unexpected, such as this one...

Kim Chi from RuPaul's Drag Race.

I've noted this before in a previous article on Mountain's process when making the narrative adventure Florence, but it really is fascinating to read about different creators' thought patterns.

Even on a game as big and loved as Monument Valley, there's such a wide range of topics and art styles that connected with the level designers. This is something that everyone can achieve and relate to in a personal sense.

Not only that, but for smaller developers (and even myself, a creative soul) it's interesting to see how ustwo has dissected the reference pictures into recognisable key elements that work for the level's design. It's a simple method, but so very effective.
