Atari redeems itself after Super Breakout brutality

Missile Command for iPhone now available

Okay, I admit it – we weren't too impressed with Atari after the Super Breakout launch campaign was run by evil, soulless lawyers, but Nolan Bushnell's brain child has gone a long way toward redeeming itself today.

The App Store is now the proud recipient of a Missile Command conversion for the iPhone; updated with some splendid new visuals. This was one of John Connor's favourite games, until it happened to him for real. He probably went off it a bit after that. Anyway, there's obviously no track ball to guide the missiles, but the game apparently makes excellent use of the iPhone's multi-touch feature, which makes our keens brains conjure an image of action-packed bomb blasting retro goodness.

Hopefully it's going to look as splendid as it does in the screenshots above (taken directly from the App Store), which seem to be something of a mock up, seeing as how the foreground action is identical on every picture. Hmmm.

Still, Apple is quite strict when it comes to App Store submissions (right, indie devs?), so we're sure everything will be just dandy. Exciting times for retro-naughts with an empty iPhone, what!?

Point a missile at the 'Track It!' now button and begin holding your breath. Eep!

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
