Out now: Use voice commands to guide a lone spaceship survivor in Mayday! Deep Space

So many games have us being guided by someone on the end of a radio. But Mayday! Deep Space inverts that by having you guide a survivor on a spaceship using only your voice.

Using over 10 voice commands, you have to get the survivor through five levels of virus-infected crew inside the USS Appaloosa.

You'll find out what happened on board the ship as you do, and will have to make various choices that lead you to one of four endings.

There are also a few chances to explore and collect secrets that you wouldn't find by sticking to the most direct route through the levels.

What's particularly neat about Mayday! is its interface. It turns your screen into a walkie-talkie. So you have to hold a button to talk into it when giving commands.

You also get a top-down view of the survivor as they run through the ship. It's by watching them on this that you know where to direct them.

If you haven't already, you absolutely must watch the preview video above. It gives a sense of how the survivor converses with you with desperation in their voice - their life is in your hands, after all.

The voice acting is as good as it is due to being delivered by actor Osric Chau, who's known for being in US TV series Supernatural. It also features voice acting from Bitsie Tulloch and Claire Coffee, both of which star in NBC's Grimm TV series.

Mayday! is the kind of game that manages to pull off a lot with only a few strong elements - voice acting, story, and voice command-based interaction.

You can purchase Mayday! Deep Space for £1.99 / $2.99 on the App Store.
