Lost in Harmony is one of those experiences that difficult to pin down. It's a rhythm action game, an auto-runner, and a tragic story all wrapped into one.

It isn't like anything else on the App Store, and while it does have a couple of problems here and there, you'll stick with it to see what other new ideas or concepts it's going to drop into your path.

And on top of all that it looks stunning, it offers some really impressive user-creation tools, and it plays brilliantly.

So what's the story?

I don't want to spoil too much here. It's about a boy and a girl dealing with an illness, and it takes place in dreams. Dreams of skateboarding. Skateboarding to remixes of classical music.

You're rolling forwards out of the screen, and obstacles can come at you from behind, in front, and the side. You also need to tap out section when icons appear in the top half of the screen.

Pushing on the left or right of the screen moves you in that direction, and swiping upwards performs a jump. Objects coming from in front and to the side of you are sign-posted with a neon blue glow, while objects from behind are, well, behind you.

It's a really interesting control scheme, and it's supplemented by some excellent level design. Everything you need to do, you need to do in time with the music, and while it takes a bit of getting used to, when it finally clicks it's worth it.

There are a few niggles here and there - the collision detection is a little wonky sometimes, and there were times when swiping on icons made me dart off the side of the road.

But when everything gels together, it's a brilliant and unique experience. You need to concentrate, pay attention to the beat, and figure out the patterns that the game is throwing at you.

That all sounds pretty complex

It is, but it never throws too much at you. It builds its mechanics well, and the brilliant, sad story, pushes you on when things get a little too tough.

And for perfectionists there's a lot more to do. Each level has two difficulty settings, you can make your own tracks from your iTunes or SoundCloud, and new content unlocks once a certain number of people have downloaded the game.

The music is incredible, the presentation is excellent, and the story of youth and loss is heartbreaking at times.

This is one of the most interesting games to land on the App Store in a good long while, and it's definitely worth your time.

A beautiful, sad, sometimes brilliant game. It has a few problems, but it's worth sticking with all the same

Harry used to be really good at Snake on the Nokia 5110. Apparently though, digital snake wrangling isn't a proper job, so now he writes words about games instead.
