Out at midnight: Travel to exotic new locations and slaughter the natives in Kingdom Rush: Frontiers for iOS

It's been a long time coming, but Kingdom Rush: Frontiers is finally (almost) here.

And as you might imagine given it's the sequel to one of the most popular tower defence games of all time, Kingdom Rush: Frontiers is full of new and intriguing content.

As the title of its new game implies, Ironhide Game Studio has decided to stage the action here on the fringes of the Kingdom Rush universe.

So, yep, battles will be taking place in jungles, deserts, and even in the underworld.

There are eight new tower upgrades to play with, including Crossbow Forts, Necromancers, and Earthquake Machines. Oh, and more than 40 new enemy types with which to squish them.

You'll need to fight some giant bosses if you want to make serious progress, by the way. Fortunately, you'll have nine different heroes at your disposal, each with its own special skills and upgradable attributes.

We gave the original Kingdom Rush a Gold Award back in December 2011, and said that the game "breathes new life into the tower defence genre". Here's hoping the sequel can do something similar.

Kingdom Rush: Frontiers has just gone live on the New Zealand App Store, which means it'll be available in the UK and US from around midnight tonight.

The iPhone version of Kingdom Rush: Frontiers will set you back £1.99 / $2.99, while the HD version for iPad will cost you £2.99 / $4.99.
