Folk musician Daniel Johnston is something of an acquired taste.

Suffering from bipolar disorder, his work is sometimes inspired but often unfocused, meaning he's perhaps best experienced when intepreted by others.

At least he has high profile fans. Everyone from Sebadoh to Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse, Beck and Bright Eyes have covered his songs.

Combining this music with his sketchy drawing style, Hi, How Are You brings the experience to the iPhone and iPod touch in a form of a 3D physics-based puzzle platform game.

That in itself is fairly bizarre, but the plot - Satan turns Jeremiah into a frog and steals his girlfriend, forcing you to guide said frog through 25 levels to reverse the curse and regain the girl - is pure Johnston.

The game's controls work via the iDevices' accelerometer or using a virtual D-pad depending on the specific levels. You'll have to avoid enemies, as well as overcoming obstacles, and unlocking bonus items.

Bronze, silver and gold trophies are awarded depending on your performance.

The game contains 20 achievements, each of which grants access to unique artwork, while Facebook and Twitter integration allows you to post your scores online.

Of course, the attraction of the game is likely to be limited to those who already have some interest in Johnston, but it's another reminder of the range of experiences that can be found on the App Store.

Hi, How Are You is out now, at an introductory price of 99c, €0.79 or 59p. Hit the Buy It! button to be immediately turned into a frog.
