iPhone 8 cases: best ways to protect your iPhone

The big Pocket Gamer accessory guide 2018 - iPhone 8 cases
|
Updated 3rd June: We've added some new cases to keep your iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus safe well into summer.

The iPhone 8 has been somewhat overlooked in the rush to anoint the iPhone X as the new smartphone king. But it's probably the phone most iPhone 6S users will be thinking of upgrading to right now.

A combination of limited availability and sky high price has made the iPhone X unattainable (and maybe even undesirable) to many people. The iPhone 8 is hardly cheap, but it's a good deal cheaper - and you can walk into a shop and buy one right now.

Besides which, it's simply a very accomplished phone. Together with the iPhone 8 Plus (we'll be treating both as one in this piece), it's as powerful as the iPhone X, with similar camera quality and the same wireless charging facility.

Yes, the form factor is almost identical to the iPhone 7 (and the two phones before that). There's a positive side to that though - there are already loads of great cases available for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Here are some of them.

Olixar Clear Case

If you're of the opinion that an iPhone case should make the minimal impact possible to both the look of the phone and your wallet, give the Olixar Clear Case a spin. It's a very simple, effective, cheap gel case.

Peel Super Thin Case

Peel's case is as minimalist and unobtrusive as they come, with a super-thin material and an admirable no-logo design approach. Of course, it won't help much in a drop situation, but scratches shouldn't be a problem.

Suggested price: £19

Torro wallet case

We haven't included any folio/wallet cases for the iPhone 8 yet, so we'll put the Torro forward for consideration. It's smart, distinctively styled, genuine leather, and surprisingly cheap.

Suggested price: £22

Mujjo Full Leather Wallet

A stylish (and cheaper) alternative to Apple's own leather case, this Mujjo effort comes in black, tan, and grey options, and also has the added bonus of an external wallet compartment for your cards. Just don't use wireless charging when these are occupied!

Suggested price: £40

Totallee thin case

These cases from totallee aren't too concerned with making your iPhone 8 bomb-proof. They just want to keep those metal and glass surfaces free from everyday nicks and scratches. Aside from that, they just get out of the way a super-thin, detail free design.

Suggested price: £19

Case-Mate Tough

The Case-Mate Touch provides extensive shock protection against drops of up to 10 feet, with reinforced corners and a soft inner cushion. You also get a unique metal portrait kickstand, so you can have your phone constantly stood up and facing you on a desk or table.

Suggested price: £20

Apple Leather Case

As if to prove our point on the similarity between the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8's dimensions, Apple's own Leather Case is marketed as being suitable for both. If you want the classy feel of leather and unmatched fit and lightness, this is the only case for you.

Apple Smart Battery Case

Apple's Smart Battery Case doesn't just protect your iPhone 8 - it also boosts talk time by up to 12 hours. The price you pay for that is a somewhat unsightly bulge around back. Oh, and a cool £100. But if you're a frequent traveler and heavy user, it could be a life saver.

Suggested price: £100

Silk Base Grip

There are an awful lot of tacky cases on the market that rather spoil Apple's restrained designs. Silk is one brand that keeps things really simple while keeping the quality level high. The Silk Base Grip is a simple, textured, one-piece TPU case that doesn't detract too much from the phone's appearance.

Silk Vault

Silk is at it again, this time with a handy case that can also hold three of your bank or store cards. Perfect for the wallet haters among you.

GEAR4 Carnaby

If you're after something a little funkier from your case, check out the GEAR4 Carnaby. It's got a unique bubbly design that stands out from the chunky case crowd. It also provides protection against falls of up to 3 metres in height, too, so it's not just a pretty face.

Suggested price: £24

Spigen Ultra Hybrid

The trouble with all cases is that they necessarily compromise the look of your phone. There are loads of transparent cases that help mitigate that, but the Spigen Ultra Hybrid is one of the best thanks to its snug fit and air-cushioned corners.

Suggested price: £9

Speck Presidio Grip

Let's just spell it out here: you want a case for your iPhone 8 in order to protect it. When it comes to the crunch, the Speck Presidio Grip provides more outright shock protection than most similarly skinny cases thanks to a dynamic shock-absorbing material lining the interior of the case.

Suggested price: £28

Dog & Bone Wetsuit Impact

The iPhone 8 is IP67 rated, which means it's fully protected against dust ingress and can withstand immersion in water up to one meter for 30 minutes. If you want to go even deeper, fit your iPhone 8 with a Wetsuit Impact and boost that rating to IP68. It's also very rugged, with a military-standard drop rating and a built-in screen protector.
