Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon is a strange game. It feels like it should be free to play. It's got multiple currencies, layered challenges, and a system that encourages grind.

But it's a premium title. There are no IAPs whatsoever here. Everything you need is doled out in little dollops when you finish a level.

It makes for a strange experience. It's not without its entertaining moments, but it feels too shallow to wholeheartedly recommend.

Defenders of the earth

The game is a simple touchscreen arena battler with some RPG elements. You control a team of four characters from the upcoming Marvel blockbuster, dragging and tapping to kill waves of goons.

Each of the characters has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. Star Lord is great with a blaster, but if anything gets too close he's in trouble. Drax is an out and out brawler, while Groot can heal and buff.

Picking your best team is key to success, but you need to upgrade your weapons and equip new gadgets and armour as well. Then there's a crystal system that lets you toughen up various aspects of a character, from strength to defence.

Levels have different obstacles that need to be avoided. Vents spew out flames and nodes connect to send out bolts of lightning.

You need to keep on the move, dodging the hazards, and making sure your team is positioned so it can be as effective as possible.

Not quite the mightiest heroes

And it's fun for a while. Different characters can join together to unleash impressive combo attacks, and equipping and upgrading adds a level of strategy to your battles.

But things get a little repetitive, and the core of the game isn't really all that interesting to begin with. After a while the line drawing and tapping just becomes a bit dull and a bit too fiddly.

If you're a fan of the comics there's more here to like, and if you're looking forward to the film the game might be worth a punt. But Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon is just too muddled to properly click.

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon

A strange game that doesn't quite fit its own shell, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon is fun, but not really enough fun
