Square Enix is giving you the chance to create your own collection of classic Final Fantasy creatures with its new free-to-play card-based RPG battler Guardian Cross.

The brainchild of Final Fantasy veteran Hiroyuki Ito, the game involves your building a party of powerful Guardians by hunting them down and acquiring their respective cards.

There are over 180 Guardians to capture and collect, many of which are based on iconic monsters from FFXI and FFXIV. So, expect Moogles. Lots of Moogles.

In addition to engaging in the genre-specific turn-based combat, however, you will actually have to track and shoot your desired monsters with an "enchanted rifle" in a first-person mini-game.

Once you've blasted some beasties into line, you can tackle quests to discover why these once-dormant creatures have been awakened, and face off against other players in the online coliseum.

According to Squeenix, you can complete the entire game without spending a penny on in-app purchases (though premium items and upgrades are available).

If you want to put Guardian Cross though its paces (or just stare at the pretty artwork), you can download it free of charge for iPhone and iPad now.
