Tower defence games can sometimes feel a bit too hands-off. You place your defences, then sit back and wait to see whether you've put them in strategically sensible positions or they're facing in completely the wrong direction.

In Go Home Dinosaurs, on the other hand, you're kept busy at all times.

You need to collect coconuts to buy new weapons, twist those new weapons into the right position on the track, AND ensure the gopher you're in control of is making himself useful.

Naughty dinos

You need to protect a barbecue from a horde of hungry dinosaurs who are stomping down a pre-defined path intent on stealing all the steaks.

In each game, you select a number of weapons - in the form of cards - to take onto the field of play. These have coconut costs and can only be played when you've got enough fruit to pay for them. You collect coconuts by tapping on them.

By collecting coconuts, though, this means that your gopher isn't throwing rocks at the dinosaurs. Ergo, you need to balance offence and defence to make sure you're not overwhelmed too soon. You can also buy bombs and single-use power-ups from a store with coins you collect as you play.

If you want to get the most out of your weapon - each of which has its own shape - you have to position it correctly. The laser, for example, is three squares long and fires in any number of squares in one direction. The DJ Booth, by contrast, blasts out one square from two of its sides.

Steaks are high

Learning how to get the best out of your weapons, and knowing which ones to take into battle, is a crucial part of the game. This interesting tactical diversion turns what is otherwise a standard, but enjoyable, tower defence game into something approaching 'refined'.

If you're not a fan of the TD genre, then there's nothing here that's going to change your mind. If, however, you're looking for a tower defence title that's not too taxing and has a couple of tricks up its sleeve, you should make a beeline for Go Home Dinosaurs now.

Go Home Dinosaurs

A fun and diverting little tower defence game, Go Home Dinosaurs doesn't offer enough to be a classic, but it's worth a punt all the same
