Whatever happened to the iPhone and iPad version of Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars? Ubisoft announced the iOS port over a year ago, and we haven't heard a peep since.

Well, according to the lead designer of the original 3DS game, Ubisoft has been trying to redesign the game as a free-to-play title, packed with in-app purchases.

Julian Gollop - best known as director of the original X-COM game (UFO: Enemy Unknown) - told a curious tweeter, "last I heard they were trying to transform it into F2P with IAP."

It's something he described as "very silly". He adds that "[Ubisoft] may have given up entirely."

We've reached out to the French publisher, to get the inside line on the current status of the project. We'll let you know what we hear.

We sure hope it's still on the cards. In our Bronze Award review, we described the 3DS original as "a turn-based strategy [game] that's easy on newcomers but with enough depth for veterans of the genre to enjoy as well."
