Hip-hop band gets ahead with Gedda-Headz
Massively multiplayer mobile games meet... vinyl collectibles?
Los Angeles hip-hop band Gedda-Headz haven't even released their first single yet, but they've already got their first MMO mobile gaming community. That's modern music marketing for you.
It's a fascinating project, though. Collectible vinyl Gedda-Headz figurines will be sold in shops, with each coming with a unique code giving access to the community. There are 36 to collect in all.
Once registered, players will be able to download a series of free games for Java handsets or iPhone/iPod touch, which will let them play against other people. Details are scarce for now, other than that one game will be touch hockey, and another is called Spark.
There are chat features, GPS to find nearby Headz owners to make friends with, and a website offering stats, profiles and messaging functions.
The official website is live now, while the band Gedda-Headz have a MySpace profile with a bit more info on them. The full details will be unveiled at the Gamescom show in Cologne next month.
