Freemium games have been topping the top-grossing charts on the App Store in recent months purely through in-app purchases, and social gaming companies are being bought up in their dozens by large publishers.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Gameloft is looking to enter the iPhone and iPad freemium market next year in a big way.

The French publisher has already released its first Facebook social game, Green Farm, but Pocket Gamer has learnt that there's a more serious MMO planned for iOS devices in 2011, with ‘hardcore’ stylings similar to Sega’s Kingdom Conquest.

As well as jumping aboard the freemium train, Gameloft is looking into in-app purchases - such as multiplayer map packs - in its paid games. While nothing has been confirmed, shooter N.O.V.A. 2 and RTS StarFront are two very good bets.

No further details on the game are available, but we suspect this new freemium title is likely to be one of a number of original franchises slated for the new year.
