Best new iOS and Android games this week: The Escapists, After the End, Pan-Pan and more
Escapes, ethereal puzzlers, and entertaining names
Looking for something decent to load up on your smartphone or tablet this weekend? You're in luck.
Each week we run through the best and most interesting games to have hit the App Store and Google Play Store over the past seven days or so.
We'll be honest, it's been a tough ask for any mobile game grab our attention this week, what with the arrival of a certain Nintendo console doing its best to distract the PG team. That the following games have managed to do so is a testament to their quality.
After the End: Forsaken DestinyBy Nexon M - buy on iOS / buy on Android
This lovely-looking adventure puzzler is bursting with fresh ideas, not to mention distinct notes of Journey, Monument Valley and Poco Eco. That's some pedigree.
The EscapistsBy Team17 - buy on iOS / buy on Android
The biggest mobile game release of the week has to be The Escapists - a very well received strategy game that's been popping up on all sorts of platforms over the last couple of years. The idea is to break out of prison by crafting, bartering, stealing and sneaking.
Tavern GuardiansBy Wombo Combo Games - buy on iOS
The match-three RPG might sound like an unlikely mash-up, but it's actually quite a heavily subscribed one. Still, Tavern Guardians is one of the best examples on the App Store, with plenty of strategic depth.
BreakforcistBy Lucid Sheep - buy on iOS
We're tempted to name Breakforcist the undisputed game of the week for its puntastic name alone. That it's also a delightfully bright spin on the Breakout template is almost a bonus.
Pan-PanBy Spellcraft - buy on iOS
Pan-Pan is another beautiful puzzler that appears to draw some of its aesthetic ideas from Monument Valley and Journey. This is an altogether more open adventure game however, with interlocking environmental puzzles.
