Friday Freebie: Robots, castles...

And kooky word games

Friday Freebie: Robots, castles...

| Friday Freebie

Since our last freebie report, our terrifying apocalyptic ravings have been subsided. The politicians have kissed and made up, the Icelandic volcano has spewed its last molten belch and Justin Bieber is no longer a trending topic on Twitter.

So we can all relax, chill out and grab an eclectic and entirely unrelated handful of freebies from the iPhone App Store.

WALL-i

Perhaps the most eye-catching price drop this week has been Scraps, [iTunes link], which features a cute robotic pal in a mind-bending puzzle platformer. You take control of a scraps operator who has to guide his android buddies to safety in a sort of retro Lemmings-style head-scratcher.

It comes packed with a level editor, and with over 100 community-made stages already uploaded to the store, this could be some of the most long-lasting fun you'll ever get out of absolutely nothing.

But if you don't like saving cute little robotic friends, you can choose to blow them up instead in Buster Red [iTunes link].

This vertical shooter looks like the hallucinogenic drawings of someone who's played way too much Don Don Pachi. It's retro fun, but with a doodle pen-and-ink style. It's on OpenFeint too, so you can rinse it for achievements.

Lord of the Ringtones

Not into sci-fi? Prefer a fantasy romp? Castle Fantasy's [iTunes link] weird mix of 2D illustrations in full 3D worlds might satiate your old-timey swords and sorcery needs. Developer Croquis has set the game to free until the game gets its next update, which promises tighter controls, more difficultly levels and more leaderboards.

Moxie [iTunes link], on the other hand, looks and sounds like it comes straight from a 1920s parlour game shop. This is a unique word game that thinks Scrabble, Boggle and anagrams are all 'twaddle'

Instead, it offers up a rather confusing, but utterly addictive little system where you add and replace letters to make new words, and get bonus points for keeping a combo running. Best just to watch the instructional video, it's a little tough to explain in 50 odd words.

Outside the App Store's walls

Over on the Playstation Store, there's a new piece of free downloadable content for LittleBigPlanet. You can grab a Jungle Sackfari Explorers costume kit for your little burlap buddy for absolutely zilch.

On DSiWare there's... you guessed it, nothing free.

And on our site, our podcast is free too.

Well, all our content is free, but that's rather obvious. Subscribe to our spoken word entertainment through iTunes or Zune Marketplace or whatever spiffy piece of software you use to catch your pods.

We also have the Trawler Report, which trawls through the labyrinthine App Store, wading through all 200k apps looking for great games that'll cost you nothing.

Till next time; be vigilant, traveller.
