Fortnite is offering up $8 million in prize money in its first ever Summer Skirmish

While there have been murmurings of Fortnite esports in past weeks, Epic Games has gone on the record today to announce the game's first competitive series. The Summer Skirmish series is an 8-week event that will dole out a total of $8,000,000 in prize money.

The festivities kick off this weekend in a Duos competition promising $250,000 in prizes. Participants have already been selected from “community creators” and players who’ve made a splash in competition, but Epic Games promises more information on how others will be able to qualify. Epic is planning to keep players on their toes, switching up the gameplay format and the competitors as the weeks pass.

It will be exciting to see how the Summer Skirmish plays out, especially with an eye towards future Fortnite esports events. It’s been a pretty big year for Fortnite, and there are no signs of it stopping anytime soon. Season 5 is rolling out alongside the Summer Skirmish this week, and there’ve even been hints that Fortnite could be coming to Android quite soon.
