If you're over the age of 12 then you probably haven't heard of Fish Hooks. It's a Disney-produced animated TV show in the wild and wacky vein of SpongeBob SquarePants and Ren & Stimpy, and it focuses on the zany exploits of a bunch of aquatic buddies trying to get through school.
Now, we know what you're thinking - that setup is practically begging for a physics-based iOS puzzle game, and that's exactly what Disney has given us.
Under the seaThe objective in each of the game's 50 levels is to collect as many apples as possible (there are three on each stage) and convey your fish safely to a pipe, which sucks it on to the next challenge.
You do this using bubbles. When the stage begins, your fish is trapped inside one - a tap pops the bubble and causes the fish to plummet, while tapping it again creates another bubble, allowing it to rise again.
You can create bubbles to influence parts of the scenery, too: for example, they can alter the position of platforms in the level, creating slides that guide your fish towards apples or the exit.
Fishy stuffAs you move through the game's five chapters, other elements are brought into play. Turtles can be used to bounce your fish towards certain parts of a level, while anvils are present to destroy the deadly coral reefs that block your path to victory.
In-between each chapter you'll discover challenge stages, which offer slight variations on the core gameplay and allow you to unlock additional characters from the TV show.
All in all, it's a tightly produced package, offering plenty of gameplay and not a hint of in-app purchasing in sight - quite an achievement when you consider that Disney is offering the game entirely free of charge.
Tanks for the memoriesA little more variety wouldn't have gone amiss, as the game lacks the sheer inventiveness that the best examples of the genre offer, but there's still a few days of solid entertainment being supplied here, and the lush presentation keeps things fresh and appealing.
Even if you've never seen a single frame of animation from the show, this is a worthwhile download for fans of physics- based puzzlers - and thanks to its non-existent price point, there's no reason not to give it a try.
