Speculation over how game development powerhouse Bethesda will enter the iPhone market has been rife, with the smart money going on some form of handheld spin-off of one of its larger franchises, such as Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

Lately, however, all has been quiet on the Bethesda front, other than its parent company buying out John Carmack's id Software studio. So it seems these two matters might not be unrelated.

Speaking to Kotaku, Todd Howard said the unnamed iPhone title he originally announced is still in the works, after being delayed while id Software was assimilated. He also suggests that John Carmack now holds sway with Bethesda developments, and given his recent activity on the iPhone, it seems reasonable to assume their game design guru will be taking point on any forthcoming App Store projects.

Exactly what those projects are, Howard refused to say.

"It's one of those things where I wish it would happen sooner," he concludes. "But we're definitely going to do some stuff."
