We looked at the possibility of PC and console game studio Bethesda Softworks entering the iPhone market back in February, when rumours of Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 for Apple's platform first appeared.

At this year's E3, it seems Joystiq cornered Bethesda's Todd Howard, and quizzed him on the likelihood of the epic, post nuclear RPG shooter coming to the iPhone.

"I think that the world of Fallout is unique enough that it could work on any platform. I think some of the things we do like VATS, I think that could translate to any platform, particularly the iPhone," Howard said.

Indeed, the overall size of Fallout 3 as it stands on the PC is too much for most desktops, never mind handhelds (although...), but there's no reason that one of the game's smaller aspects could be adapted.

"We've looked into those things, we just haven't found the thing that supports the brand well. I wouldn't be surprised if it does happen one day," Howard continues. "The iPhone versions that we've designed and said, 'Ehh, we don't think we're going to do that right now,' there are... there are a lot of them."

Although it's difficult to gleam much sense from that last statement, it's reassuring – and not a little bit exciting – to know that Bethesda is, at the very least, poking around inside the iPhone.

Even if it's a totally new IP, rather than Elder Scrolls or Fallout, an iPhone game designed from the ground up by this gaming powerhouse would be awesome news indeed. Watch this space.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
