The rite of exorcism might be effective at expelling unwanted demons, but it sure isn't as fun as casting them out with match-three puzzle play in Devil Invasion.

Both are challenging rituals, though matching medallions to ward off enemies is a lot more appealing than flicking holy water and chanting esoteric Latin verse. Lining up tiles in groups of three or more is all you need to do to beat back the ill-intended creatures of Devil Invasion.

As demons march across the top of the screen toward your castle, aligning special attack icons levels attacks. Obviously, the goal is to destroy every last devil before the lot of them trample through two defensive towers and storm your castle - if they break in, it's Game Over.

Combining coloured medallions stocks you up magic stones crucial for casting spells. Money, which is accumulated by matching bags of gold during battle, can be used to purchase spells, of which you can equip three at any given time.

Sacred spells

These range in effect from Fire Ball, which summons a flaming sphere that incinerates several enemies, to Ice Storm, which slows down foes to give you more time to match attack medallions. More creative skills like TNT let you sacrifice a tower for massive damage.

Casting these spells tops your list of priorities and amassing the necessary magic stones means making matches quickly. Battles occur in real-time, so later stages test your ability to spot matches and act on them with haste. In fact, the last few levels are quite challenging and really put on the pressure.

Devil Invasion is definitely fun, yet it's impossible to shake that familiar feeling. There isn't anything here that you haven't seen in other match-three role-playing hybrids. While it conjures up decent fun, the absence of any truly new ideas prevents this cute game from being heaven-sent.

A fun match-three RPG hybrid that hits all the right notes, even if they are familiar ones
