Capcom has announced that Dead Rising, its Zombies-in-a-crowded-location franchise, will be making its way to iPhone later this year, with a cut down version of the series’ first game.

The game pits Frank West, a veteran photo journalist (he’s covered wars, ya’know?), against a Willamette shopping centre that's bursting with the shuffling undead. You’ve got to do missions, solve the mystery, and get back to civilisation while beating up hundreds of living corpses.

Like Resident Evil 4 on iPhone, Dead Rising might look rather familiar but it's been created especially for the device and built from the ground up.

It loses a fair bit in the transition, too: no boss fights, no nagging survivors to escort, you can’t take photos, there are no vehicles to drive, and you won’t be dressing up in a tutu and a horse's head - costumes are off the menu.

It’s got a cool social networking hook: if you die in the game, a rescue call will be yelled out onto your Twitter or Facebook feeds. If someone picks up the call, and plops the password into their app, you won’t lose your PP upon respawn. If no one answers, you’ll be sent back to the start with no bonuses, becoming a zombie in a friend’s game.

IGN learned about some of the possible updates that the game would get if, like Street Fighter, it proves popular on iTunes. More playable characters (perhaps Chuck from Dead Rising 2?) and the ability to throw on costumes could come if the game’s well received.

IGN seemed to be impressed with the controls, and the mostly faithful adaption of the console game, but mentioned that the app is still “early” in development, thanks to some niggling camera bugs and annoying pop-up.

The game is planned for release later this year for iPhone and iPod touch (though it won’t work on older models like the iPhone 3G).
