Pixel Worlds review - Another Minecraft-like or exciting untread territory?

For: iPhone

Pixels for all

Product: Choose a company Pixel Worlds | Publisher: Kukouri Mobile Entertainment | Format: iPhone | Players: 1 | Version: US | App version: 1.0.62

Pixel Worlds is a sprawling collection of handcrafted sandbox worlds. You create an avatar before you're set loose to make your mark on the world, solo or with other friends you make along the way.

However, in a world full of sandbox games trying to bank off of the ultra-successful Minecraft model, Pixel Worlds has to really bring something special to the table. Unfortunately it doesn’t really try anything new, and dis a lesser game for it.

Community is key

Multiplayer plays a huge role in Pixel Worlds, and luckily it’s also where you’re likely to have the most fun. Players can travel to worlds created by others or build online playgrounds for other folks to come and try.

The developers have put a lot of effort into building up a strong community with leader boards featuring the best worlds, dedicated Twitch streams and YouTube content, and an easy-to-use friend management system.

The social aspects are well thought out, and aside from the occasional person begging for items or punching you into lava pools, it’s a pretty decent place to hang out if this is your kind of thing.

I’m here . . . now what?

With that said, the actual gameplay leaves something to be desired. If you’ve played Growtopia, you know exactly what you’re getting into. You terraform your little world by punching blocks which will occasionally yield gems (premium currency) and seeds.

You’ll build up a homebase by planting said seeds in creative combinations to get new items. Or you can buy them with gems.

The tutorial essentially tells you how to punch things before leaving you to your own devices. Folks comfortable with these survival sandbox games will settle in just fine, but the lack of a real tutorial will leave others feeling quite lost.

While the game’s pixel art looks nice, the gameplay itself is neither fresh nor interesting. If you invest enough time in the game you can build your own little home on the internet, but there are plenty of other, richer games on iOS and Android that let you do the same.

Passable Pixels

Pixel Worlds does exactly what you'd expect, no more and no less. It tends to attract a younger player base, but does have a lively audience so you won't be wandering deserted worlds on your lonesome.

With that said, you’re just as well off playing a game like Growtopia, or, even better, Terraria. Pixel Worlds works and it looks nice enough, but it’s definitely not a must have for your game collection.

Pixel Worlds is fine if you're looking for a new mobile multiplayer sandbox, but nothing more
