Captain Cat isn't the greatest fisherman the world has ever known. For starters, he uses an anchor rather than the more traditional hook to try and land his catch. And every time he does catch something, it escapes again almost immediately.

Still, at least the Captain's pitiful maritime skills make for an entertaining, if a little uninspiring, casual arcade game. It might not be memorable, but Captain Cat will keep you entertained for a good few hours.

O captain! My captain!

The game is all about guiding your anchor into the gob of a waiting fish. Along the way there are coins to collect, treasure chests to nab, and a variety of nautical obstacles for you to avoid. To all intents and purposes, this is fishing re-imagined as a maze game.

You loose your anchor with a tap and it falls into the water, swinging as it sinks. You'll need to tap again when the anchor is pointing in the direction you want it to travel. Hold your finger down and the lump of metal will shoot off until you take away your digit.

To begin with, your main problem is rock. If your anchor hits one of the black walls under the sea you'll lose all your progress and have to start again. Later on you'll encounter eels that bite through your line, undersea vents that force your anchor in inconvenient directions, and whirlpools that drag it in and spit it out somewhere else.

It's not all about grabbing the pesky fish, though. You'll need to watch the number of taps it takes you to get to your prey, as well as keeping an eye on the clock if you want to get the highest scores.

Fishing for compliments

There are plenty of levels to work your way through, and they're brief enough that you can fit a couple in when you find yourself with a few minutes to spare. Everything is packaged in the obligatory cutesy cartoon style, too.

Captain Cat is a perfectly entertaining arcade maze game. It won't change the way you think about smartphone gaming, but it will keep you smiling for a while, and sometimes that's all you want from a game.

Plenty of fun while you're playing, Captain Cat isn't going to change the world, but it might brighten up a dreary afternoon
