8 iOS games to scare you witless this Friday 13th
The horror, the horror
It's Friday the 13th, the unluckiest of dates on the western calendar. Why is that?
Some intermingling of superstitious ideas combining the fact that both Friday and the number 13 are considered unlucky, apparently.
For most of us today, of course, it holds no actual fear. Instead, it's a day to revel in schlocky horror movies and spooky stories. Oh, and horror games, of course.
To mark 2017's second and final Friday the 13th, then, we thought we'd round up some spooky games that will have you quaking in your jim-jams.
Party Hard GOParty Hard GO is a decent stealthy assassin game, but it's key twist is that it casts you as a Friday 13th (the movie) style masked serial killer. Yikes. Move around various house parties offing the unsuspecting partakers in new and imaginative ways.
Slayaway CampHere's another game that casts you as a Jason Voorhees-like masked psycho, and charges you with offing a bunch of innocents. What's remarkable is that it's also a thoughtful, cute (yes, cute) sliding block puzzler.
Darkest DungeonA remarkably grim, endlessly fascinating roguelike dungeon crawler with a Lovecraftian air. When a game features sanity as a key stat for your downtrodden party, you know it's a bit morbid.
OxenfreeTeenagers in peril, mysterious islands, weird goings on... Oxenfree plays out like a classic horror movie - albeit a remarkably stylish one. The dialogue's better than your average horror film too.
Into The Dead 2This sequel to PikPok's atmospheric autorunner places a little more emphasis on action, but it's still a highly tense game. Running into a misty twilight forest in first person view, with zombies looming out at you, is a surefire way to give you the creeps.
HomeA story-led adventure that sees your amnesiac hero waking up in a spooky abandoned mansion. It's a very clever, unsettling game that has you doubting the sanity of the protagonist. Chilling stuff.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister LocationThere are a whole bunch of FNaF games on the App Store now, and all are designed to make you jump out of your skin. You're the night shift worker in a weird restaurant when the creepy animatronic robots start venturing out on their own. Play it in the dark, we dare you.
Corpse PartyDon't pay any attention to the cutesy graphics - Corpse Party is a bloody slab of quirky Japanese horror with moments of genuinely disturbing horror. Sleuth your way through a number of grisly 'wrong ends' to get to the true ending.
