The 25 best zombie games on iPhone and iPad

25 games to feed (on) your brain
Product: Best iPhone games | Publisher: Steel Media Ltd | Format: iPhone, iPad
Updated March 14, 2018: New entries added

Just like a member of the shuffling undead horde, zombie games just will not die.

Right from the early days of the App Store, there's been an obsession with all things zombie. Most games have you blasting or avoiding them, while others see you playing as one.

As that suggests, 'zombie games' isn't a genre in the same way as, say, shoot-'em-ups or platformers. In fact, zombie games can draw from pretty much any genre.

But there's a clear insatiable hunger for zombie games on smartphone, so here are some of the best.

#1 Inside

Product: InsideFormats: iPhone, iPad, SwitchPublisher: PlaydeadGenres: Platform, Puzzle

Inside is developer Playdead's follow-up to Limbo, and it's another brutally brilliant platform-puzzler. This time it's set in a dark authoritarian regime where a mind-controlled zombie army is being amassed.

#2 Death Road to Canada

Product: Death Road to CanadaFormats: iPhone, iPadDeveloper: MadgardenPublisher: RocketCat GamesGenres: Action, Adventure, RPG

Death Road to Canada
A sharp dungeon crawler with a neat zombie twist, Death Road to Canada has way more charm and brains than your average undead-blaster. Party management and tough decision making play a part in this compelling adventure.

#3 Plants vs Zombies

Product: Plants vs ZombiesFormats: Android, DS, DSi, iPhone, PS Vita, Xperia Play, SteamDeveloper: PopCap GamesPublisher: PopCap GamesGenres: Strategy, Tower defence

Plants vs Zombies
The game that launched a mini franchise and popularised the lane defence sub-genre, PopCap's Plants vs Zombies remains an accessible yet tactical treat to this day.

#4 Fighting Fantasy: Blood of the Zombies

Product: Fighting Fantasy: Blood of the ZombiesFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Tin Man GamesPublisher: Tin Man GamesGenres: Strategy

Fighting Fantasy: Blood of the Zombies
Tin Man Games turns to the undead in this superb gamebook conversion. Featuring sharp writing from Ian Livingstone himself and plenty of schlock horror, it's a treat for horror story fans.

#5 Organ Trail: Director's Cut

Product: Organ Trail: Director's CutFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: The Men Who Wear Many HatsPublisher: The Men Who Wear Many HatsGenres: Adventure, Retro, Shooter, Simulation

Organ Trail: Director's Cut
A delightfully, darkly comic survival horror adventure game that deftly parodies the altogether more wholesome and educational The Oregon Trail.

#6 The Walking Dead: The Game

Product: The Walking Dead: The GameFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, PS Vita, Ouya, SteamPublisher: Telltale GamesGenres: Adventure

The Walking Dead: The Game
There are three series of Telltale's Walking Dead adventure games on the App Store. However, it's worth treating them as a single entity, because they're all about meaningful narrative choices and character development amidst all the undead carnage.

#7 Mini Day Z

Product: Mini Day ZFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Bohemia InteractiveGenres: Strategy

Mini Day Z
A shrink-wrapped version of one of the original zombie survival game big-hitters, Day Z. Mini Day Z offers simple top-down gameplay on a surprisingly sprawling randomised map.

#8 Into the Dead 2

Product: Into the Dead 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: PikPok

Into the Dead 2
This sequel to PokPok's superb first person autorunner focuses more on the action, with a heavier emphasis on gunplay. It remains a highly atmospheric zombie game, though.

#9 Dead Venture

Product: Dead VentureFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: DogByte GamesGenres: Action

Dead Venture
If there's one thing that's more tired than zombies, it's blocky Minecraft graphics. Yet Dead Venture features both and is a very fresh action game that sees you running down zombies in your car.

#10 Apocalypse Max

Product: Apocalypse MaxFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: WandakeGenres: Platform, Shooter

Apocalypse Max
Borrowing liberally from the Metal Slug series, Apocalypse Max is a detailed and polished 2D action-platformer with stacks of zombie blasting. Violent and entertaining in equal measure.

#11 Infectonator

Product: InfectonatorFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Toge ProductionsPublisher: Armor GamesGenres: Casual, Strategy

Infectonator is another game to turn the standard zombie apocalypse story on its head. Here you are actively trying to ravage major cities with your zombie hordes, making for a gleefully dark casual strategy experience.

#12 Minigore 2: Zombies

Product: Minigore 2: ZombiesFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Mountain SheepPublisher: Mountain SheepGenres: Shooter

Minigore 2: Zombies
Something of a forgotten minor classic of the App Store, Minigore 2 is a colourful twin-stick shooter that continues to impress with its relentless and improbably cute zombie-culling action.

#13 Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Product: Plants vs. Zombies HeroesFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: PopCap GamesGenres: Card battler, Multiplayer

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes
The Plants vs Zombies series embarks on an unexpectedly accomplished parallel career as a card battler, retaining enough of its lane-defence heritage to remain true to the original.

#14 Dragon Hills 2

Product: Dragon Hills 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Rebel Twins

Dragon Hills 2
A game that harks back to the early days of smartphone gaming, with a simple swoop mechanic and oodles of physics-based destruction in a zombie-filled world.

#15 Dead Trigger 2

Product: Dead Trigger 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: MADFINGER GamesPublisher: MADFINGER GamesGenres: Action, Shooter

Dead Trigger 2
This technically impressive, generously proportioned first person shooter is packed full of zombie head-popping arena action. One of the most instantly gratifying and cathartic games on this list.

#16 Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies

Product: Call of Duty: Black Ops ZombiesFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, Xperia PlayDeveloper: Ideaworks Game StudioPublisher: Activision BlizzardGenres: Arcade, Conversion, Shooter

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies
This isn't the complete CoD experience on mobile, but Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is nonetheless an entertaining hoard-mode shooter that doesn't take itself too seriously.

#17 War of the Zombie

Product: War of the ZombieFormats: iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Van der Veer GamesPublisher: Van der Veer GamesGenres: Shooter, Strategy

War of the Zombie
'XCOM with zombies' is perhaps a tad simplistic, but that's pretty much what we have with War of the Zombie. Lead your team of soldiers around a map blasting the undead in this deep strategy game.

#18 Zombie Catchers

Product: Zombie CatchersFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Two Men and a DogGenres: Action, Platform

Zombie Catchers
The eaters become the eaten in Zombie Catchers - twisted action-platformer that has you harpoon zombies and feeding them to unwitting punters.

#19 Zombies, Run!

Product: Zombies, Run!Formats: Android, iPhone, Apple Watch, Android WearDeveloper: Six to StartGenres: Shooter

Zombies, Run!
You could argue that Zombies, Run! is a fitness tool rather than a game, but the way it gets you physically running away from a hoard of the undead is stacks of fun. Just don't kill yourself doing it.

#20 Sonny

Product: SonnyFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Armor GamesGenres: RPG

An unusual turn-based RPG in which you play the part of a beefed-up super-zombie. Sonny is a bit weird alright, but it's also well-rounded and challenging.

#21 Z Buster

Product: Z BusterFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: IsTom Games

Z Buster
Yes, the 'Z' in Z Buster stands for zombies. And yes, you spend much of the game busting undead heads. It's a pretty unoriginal gallery shooter, but it's a mighty satisfying one.

#22 Unkilled

Product: UnkilledFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: MADFINGER GamesGenres: 3D, Shooter

Let's not kid ourselves here - Unkilled is essentially another addition to the Dead Trigger series from Madfinger. You're still legging it around small maps blasting the undead in first person. Not that we're complaining.

#23 Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time

Product: Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About TimeFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: PopCap GamesGenres: Tower defence

Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time
It's not as good as the original, thanks to a poorly calibrated free-to-play structure, but Plants vs Zombies 2 remains a handsome and varied tower defence game.

#24 Radiation City

Product: Radiation CityFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Atypical Games

Radiation City
It's more than a little janky, but few mobile survival games place you into a brutal post-zombie-apocalypse world quite as convincingly as Radiation City.

#25 Guns 'n' Glory Zombies

Product: Guns 'n' Glory ZombiesFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: HandyGamesGenres: Shooter, Tower defence

Guns 'n' Glory Zombies
The popular Guns'n'Glory tower defence series gets an undead twist, as you take control of four gung-ho girls fighting back a zombie outbreak.
