The 25 best multiplayer games on iPhone and iPad

25 essential games to start your iOS collection
Product: Best iPhone games | Publisher: Steel Media Ltd | Format: iPhone, iPad
Updated July 18, 2018: New entries added

Unlike most of the other top 25 lists we assemble here on Pocketgamer, 'multiplayer' isn't a genre. Rather it's a mode of play that can be found in virtually any genre.

Picking 25 of the best multiplayer games on iOS is quite a wide remit, then. Especially when you consider that multiplayer can mean shared-handset, local multi-handset, or online.

What we've gone for, then, is a varied list of games that's hopefully somewhat representative of all the different multiplayer experiences you can have on iOS.

All share a single thing in common - they're all an absolute hoot to play with other people.

#1 Hearthstone

Product: HearthstoneFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Blizzard EntertainmentPublisher: Blizzard EntertainmentGenres: Card battler, RPG, Strategy

Yes, Hearthstone is a great CCG. The best, even. But moving beyond that, it's a superb multiplayer game, as you engage endless real life opponents in tactical turn-based battle.

#2 ReRunners

Product: ReRunnersFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Klang GamesGenres: Multiplayer, Platform, Racing

Possibly the world's first MMO platformer, ReRunners pumps new life into the autorunner with a healthy dollop of social magic. The idea is to run as fast as you can from left to right against up to five real opponents, but even if you're not the fastest there are plenty of rewards on offer.

#3 Guns of Boom

Product: Guns of BoomFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Game Insight

Guns of Boom
Guns of Boom has overtaken all pretenders to become the undisputed multiplayer FPS on mobile. It's got tight maps, meaty weapons, and - most importantly - slick, streamlined controls.

#4 Fortnite Battle Royale

Product: Fortnite Battle RoyaleFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Epic Games

Fortnite Battle Royale
You all know about Fortnite by now. It's the Battle Royale game that's taken over the internet. What's surprising is just how beautifully this multiplayer arena shooter-builder looks and plays on mobile.

#5 PUBG Mobile

Product: PUBG MobileFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Tencent Games

PUBG Mobile
The game that kicked off the whole Battle Royale craze comes to mobile, and it's surprisingly faithful to the source. Whether you're flying solo or riding shotgun with a crew of four, this is a brilliant multiplayer shooter.

#6 Death Squared

Product: Death SquaredFormats: iPhone, iPad, Switch

Death Squared
Death squared is a slick 3D puzzler that's been designed for cooperative play. One of you takes control of a blue block and the other a red block as you flip switches, block lasers and more.

#7 Dreii

Product: DreiiFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, PS VitaPublisher: EtterGenres: Multiplayer, Puzzle

Dreii is a beguilingly odd game that gives you a range of physics puzzles that must solved by dragging around a bunch of shapes behind your little craft. Many of these puzzles will need the silent assistance of other players, who will be scooting around the same levels.

#8 Spaceteam

Product: SpaceteamFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Sleeping Beast GamesPublisher: Sleeping Beast GamesGenres: Multiplayer

There's no multiplayer experience quite like Spaceteam. It turns four Bluetooth-linked iOS devices into the malfunctioning control panels of a doomed spaceship, and you must cooperate with your friends to to fly the thing.

#9 Antihero - Digital Board Game

Product: Antihero - Digital Board GameFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Versus Evil

Antihero - Digital Board Game
Antihero is one of the slickest, most immediately entertaining digital boardgames on mobile. That it can also be played with others locally or online in casual or ranked PvP is a massive bonus.

#10 World of Tanks Blitz

Product: World of Tanks BlitzFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: WargamingGenres: Action, Strategy

World of Tanks Blitz
World of Tanks was a massive multiplayer PC game that became a massive multiplayer Xbox 360 game. Now it's a massive multiplayer mobile game, offering a superbly tactical brand of real time tank warfare.

#11 Clash Royale

Product: Clash RoyaleFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Supercell

Clash Royale
Part MOBA, part CCG, all brilliant. There's simply no other PvP strategy game on iOS that's as intuitive yet tactically rewarding as Clash Royale.

#12 Clash of Clans

Product: Clash of ClansFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: SupercellGenres: Strategy, Tower defence

Clash of Clans
Clash of Clans is the ultimate freemium world-building game on mobile, but it's also a great multiplayer game. You can forge allegiances with other players, but the main appeal is in the well-calibrated matchmaking and battle system.

#13 Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

Product: Monster Hunter Freedom UniteFormats: iPhone, PSP, iPadPublisher: CapcomGenres: Action, RPG

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Yes, Capcom's beloved monster-slayer is a formidably involved solo adventure in many respects. But it really thrives when you team up with fellow hunters online to take on its screen-filling monsters.

#14 Touchdowners

Product: TouchdownersFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Colin LaneGenres: Casual

Touchdowners is a classic Colin Lane game - chaotic, relentlessly hilarious, knock-about fun with only a passing nod to actual sport. This 2D approximation of American football really comes alive in multiplayer.

#15 Kalimba

Product: KalimbaFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Press PlayGenres: Platform, Puzzle

Kalimba is a delightful platform-puzzler with a demanding co-op element for iPad users. You'll need to be on the same wavelength as your partner as you coordinate your every move.

#16 Mucho Party

Product: Mucho PartyFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: GlobZGenres: Arcade, Multiplayer, Party/mini-games

Mucho Party
The developer of Mucho Party, GlobZ, understands what makes a great same-handset multiplayer title. It's a series of one-on-one mini-games that utilise the touchscreen brilliantly - and will probably have you fighting your opponent here in the real world too.

#17 The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game

Product: The Dresden Files Cooperative Card GameFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, Steam

The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game
Played solo, The Dresden Files is a fun little board game adaptation. Played with others it's an absolute riot, as you each take control of a detective and work together to solve a case.

#18 Age of Wushu Dynasty

Product: Age of Wushu DynastyFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Snail GamesGenres: Multiplayer, RPG

Age of Wushu Dynasty
Arguably even more than the online shooter, the massively multiplayers online RPG (MMORPG) is tricky to execute on mobile. Age of Wushu: Dynasty does a grand job of squishing it all down, with just the right degree of automation and a slick combat system.

#19 Vainglory

Product: VaingloryFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Super Evil MegacorpGenres: Action, Multiplayer, MOBA

Another mobile MOBA effort, Vainglory might be a much trickier beast to play than Call of Champions, but vitally it has the hardcore vote. This means you'll never be short of some serious online competition. It looks stunning, too.

#20 Paladins Strike

Product: Paladins StrikeFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Hi-Rez StudiosGenres: Multiplayer, Shooter, MOBA

Paladins Strike
Vainglory meets Overwatch in this compelling online multiplayer action game. It looks like a classic MOBA, but Paladins Strike's direct twin-stick shooter action makes for a more visceral thrill.

Another brilliant multiplayer game that owes a debt to the air hockey table. Pktball ramps up the pace and introduces a vital degree of swipe-based skill, making for a compelling same-handset multiplayer game.

#24 Afterpulse

Product: AfterpulseFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: GamevilGenres: Multiplayer, Shooter

Here's another game that attempts the whole mobile online shooter thing. Like Trigger First, Afterpulse adopts a third person view, but it ramps up the graphical quality and intensity ten-fold.

#25 AXE.IO

Product: AXE.IOFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Crescent Moon GamesGenres:

There are plenty of .io games on the App Store, but few are as polished or as gleefully tactile as Axe.io. Guide your viking warrior around a compact arena, lobbing axes at all the other players whilst getting steadily stronger.
