App Army Assemble: Beglitched - a goldmine, or one best swept under the carpet?

If you're a big fan of Minesweeper and match-three puzzlers, Beglitched might interest you.

Aside from its intensely neon and rather retro aesthetic, it debuted as the third game in the App Store's indie take-over.

The big question is: how did our App Army take to it? It looks like Beglitched might be a little like Marmite in the sense that it's totally divided our gamers, but what a fascinating turn-out.

Okay, so, this is crazy-weird in a totally unknown and obtuse way. I would have never played a game like this if it wasn't for the App Army. The game looks like its a mess. Written in pseudo-computer lingo, you really have to pay attention. The computers, or the things you click on, have screens which you log into and take pink bunnies out.

There are other hackers you face off against and thats where the match-three comes in. You match the three whatever-they-are and try to find the hacker hiding underneath one of the match-three blocks. If you think you got him, and you press and hold that block, he will jump to another block.

I actually hate it. Sorry, the graphics are awful, I have no real idea what to do, and I've found nothing redeeming in this at all. I gave it an honest try, I really did, but I just can't get a handle on this. Maybe it would be okay for the right person, but I'm not sure at this point who that would be.

I am in love with this game. It may seem confusing at first, but you learn what to do as you progress through trial and error, but also by learning from interacting with NPC's via chatter and/or battles. If you're like me (and have spent too many office hours at work playing minesweeper) it won't take long to learn the ropes to navigate around different networks/levels/worlds.

Battles on the other hand, take a page out of the match-three genre. You have to use the powers of deduction to get around and find items. The world is fun to explore as you run into many colorful personalities and unlock perks to support your journey through cyberspace. As for the battles, it isn't just mindlessly matching things, it requires strategy to defeat your opponents, who get harder as you progress.

The writing is absolutely wonderful and I find myself smiling when I play - that's the mark of a good game. I have nothing but good things to say about Beglitched, and it's easily one of my favorite iOS games of the year so far. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a game that doesn't hold your hand all the time and requires you to use some brain power.

Don't let the first 10 minutes of Beglitched frustrate you. There's a lot going on and it doesn't hold your hand. Once you hit the second folder it all starts to click and really starts to shine. Like the insane love-child betwixt Minesweeper and a match-three, Beglitched builds on both of those ideas to become more strategic, more hectic, and more difficult.

You need to play for a few minutes or you'll give up, because hacking is not for everyone. But if you endure the first few hacks, you'll find a game full of depth, which mixes match-three and Minesweeper in a very clever way. You have to think and move very carefully so you don't step on a mine or an egg. Nobody likes eggs on their shoes. But, I really like this game. It's not for every crowd though, that's for sure.

In the beginning you may find yourself confused and frustrated. Stick with it, it does make sense, and if you open up another save you'll wonder why you didn't see the logic in the first place.

Although I'm not an avid player of match-three, the hacker vs hacker element of the game surprised me in terms of the inventive mechanics. In fact, it feels so different to a traditional match-three (in a good way) that it feels wrong to label the game as such.

I'm only part-way into the game, but the story is fun, filled with quirky characters, and there are hints at some possible secrets to discover.

I'm really digging this game. I'm not far in just yet, but I will be soon because it's a masterpiece in its own unique gameplay. If you love match-threes, Minesweeper, cute pixel graphics, and of course using your brain then you can't do any wrong with this game. I highly recommend this.
