If you're still waiting on Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, stop reading now. This is not the D&D game that you’re looking for.

Conversely, if you've been waiting for a casual-friendly, free to play Dungeons & Dragons title, then Arena of War might be up your alley.

About as far from the traditional D&D experience as you can get, Arena of War is a low-investment battler that pits your character against the Archenemies of the Realms - servants of dark gods who are intent on spreading their power and influence across the face of the Forgotten Realms.

Sure, there's the usual D&D trappings like questing and leveling up - but you won't have to worry much about your character's Charisma score while bluffing your way past a guard in this game.

Some of our readers were initially turned off by the idea of a free to play Dungeons & Dragons game, but a few have gotten over their original hesitation when Wizards of the Coast announced that Arena of War would be a part of The Sundering storyline.

This means that the players of Arena of War have a chance to help determine the outcome of The Sundering and, by extension, the future of the Forgotten Realms.

While Arena of War's gameplay has more in common with, say, Squids than Baldur’s Gate, it still might be worth a download if you grew up chucking dice to the heroic tales of Drizzt and Elminster.
