Apple eating away at DS and PSP gaming pie
Sony hit particularly hard
Just as Microsoft set out to conquer the console market, Apple seems to have set its sights onto the handheld one, and with considerable success.
According to Flurry Analytics, in 2008 the Apple share of the market was 5 per cent, versus the Nintendo DS's sizeable 75 per cent and the PSP's 20 per cent. By 2009, Sony's handheld looks decidedly weak with a drop to 11 per cent, and even the DS wasn't safe. It dropped 5 per cent.
Now, thanks to the forthcoming iPad and the hefty number of games in development for it, Apple's 2009 market share of 19 per cent is likely to increase.
It will be interesting to see if the Nintendo 3DS can help sustain Nintendo's majority, and how Sony will react to the increasing pressure. Let's face it, the Japanese electronics giant survived Microsoft, how bad can Apple be?
