An article from the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that both Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem mobile games will be Free to Play.

This is a model that could definitely benefit Animal Crossing - and actually makes a lot of sense - but it is unclear how it will work with a deep, story-driven experience like Fire Emblem.

This isn't an unexpected development as DeNA have previously gone on record to say that their initial smartphone games with Nintendo will 'rely on revenue from in-app microtransactions'.

The Wall Street Journal journalist spoke to DeNA where they confirmed that the games will be 'free to download' and this is 'increasing the likelihood that long-loved console game titles will rank high even in fiercely competitive app stores.'

Miitomo released earlier this year to mixed acclaim, and we're expecting both Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem to release this Autumn.

A further two mobile games featuring Nintendo IP will then release by March 2017.

Were you hoping for premium releases? Will you still play these games? Let us know in the usual place.
