"Like X-Com" is one of those phrases that we keep hearing in relation to iOS gaming, from fans and developers alike.

It seems a lot of people want a version of Mythos and MicroProse's cult strategy classic on their iOS devices. With no sign of an official X-Com iOS port, however, a number of iPhone and iPad developers have filled the breach offering something "like X-Com".

Aliens versus Humans is one such game - while the developer doesn't mention X-Com in the game's listing, it leads with a couple of critic quotes that do - and it's just received a huge update.

You can download version 2.0 of Aliens versus Humans on the App Store now for £1.99 / $2.99, although, of course, if you've already got the game, this will be a free update.

Aliens versus Humans is a turn-based isometric strategy game involving small squads of combatants. This zoomed-in approach focuses on your immediate (and destructible) environment, allowing you to get an advantage by firing from behind a wall, for example.

Version 2.0 is effectively two games in one, according to the developer. The original batch of levels has been moved across into the Training Missions category, with a whole new batch of levels now available under the name Onslaught.

Indeed, these aren't just more of the same - the Onslaught levels include world-management elements, such as geoscaping, base building, and research.

Plus, version 2.0 contains all the usual tweaks, improvements, and fixes you'd expect from seven months' extra development.

So, if you're itching for an X-Com-like experience on your iPhone or iPad, give the newly updated Aliens versus Humans a whirl.
